Ridgeline House
Ridgeline House
Auckland, New Zealand
Every ridgeline is a boundary. Above it there is only weather and horizon. Below it, the land closes around whatever it holds.
This family home sits low on the hill, with two long cedar forms following the line of the ridge. From a distance the timber takes on the colour of the dry grasses, and the house reads as part of the hill rather than an object on it.
You arrive from above, on the sheltered side, through a stone courtyard with a single tree. A low band of glass across the courtyard gives a first glimpse of the valley beyond. From the entry, the house steps down into the hill, and as you descend the view opens up, the light grows, and you arrive at the hearth in the warmest and brightest room of the house.
The materials follow the ridgeline. Cedar lines everything above it, and rough stone, cobbles and dark steel ground everything below, so you always know where you stand in the hill.
The lower rooms are made for shelter, a warm place to sit by the fire and watch the weather move across the valley. The stone is cool to the touch and the cedar carries its scent through the house.
To live here is to live on the line itself. Held by the earth, open to the sky.
